The Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) remains a challenging clinical entity. Despite vigorous research efforts and ever evolving treatment modalities, mortality has remained virtually unchanged over the last decade. Clinical studies have not been able to show beneficial outcome effects for most therapeutic interventions (apart from low tidal volume ventilation), although the benefits of short term effects are sufficiently proven. The outcome effects may be biased by several facts. The objectives of this consortium are to understand the different factors governing different responses, as well as the treatment and outcome of ARDS. With this information we hope to improve the existing treatment algorithms.

The objectives of the consortium are as follows:

  • Collaborative translational ARDS research on molecular aspects, technical support, pharmaceutical support, quality of life
  • Relevance of EBM recommendations with respect to ARDS
  • Evaluation of structure, process and outcome quality
  • Implementation of EBM in clinical routine by decision aids and educational training (transfer)
